Health and Wellness Coaching is a client-led, collaborative process
It aims to promote self-management, self-empowerment and equip an individual to adapt positively to their internal and external environment to create a state of resilience through the pursuit of activities and a lifestyle that cultivates their whole-health continuum. (UKIHCA Standards Review Group 2020).
Health coaches views the individual as the expert in their own health, unlocking an individual’s potential to facilitate change and supporting individuals to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to enable change.
The coach will help motivate and facilitate change and provide accountability to enable achievement of health and wellbeing goals, providing access to self-management. For further information please click here.
Scope of practice
What is within the scope of health coaching?
- Co-creating a health improvement plan in partnership with the client
- Setting health and wellbeing goals together with the client and supporting the client to achieve these goals
- Giving basic guidance on nutrition and lifestyle
- Helping the client to self-manage their symptoms through healthy lifestyle
- Partnering with other health professionals
- Providing appropriate educational resources relevant to the client’s health challenges
- Prompting the client to research any interventions relating to their health condition
- Prompting the client to research any diagnostic testing related to their health condition
What is outside the scope of health coaching?
- Diagnosing health conditions
- Treating a health condition or claiming to cure a health condition
- Giving detailed advice on nutritional and lifestyle medicine, including elimination diets
- Prescribing therapeutic protocols/treatments or nutritional supplements such as vitamins, minerals, herbs or other nutraceuticals.
- Ordering or interpreting diagnostic tests such as blood, urine or saliva tests
