If we are happier, we are healthier, and if we are healthier, we are also happier. Our mind and body are unified so our mindset for which we live life, matters to our overall wellbeing and we will function more optimally with a happier mind, as this equates to happier cells.
“The relationship between body, mind and spirit is that the body reflects what is held in the mind”.1
David Hawkins
So, what is happiness?
Happiness is a state of joy, wellbeing and contentment. It is not a constant state, as human evolution has primed us to be vigilant to threat, as survival is a priority. Therefore, happiness is in a state of ebb and flow and it may be something we need to devote attention to if we wish to become happier and healthier.
Happiness is intrinsic, which means we have the resources within to achieve this state, as David Hawkins testifies “The relationship between body, mind and spirit is that the body reflects what is held in the mind”. Attributes of wellbeing, such as having a purpose in life, being connected to each other, being part of and belonging to a community, being kind to others and healthy nutrition, all have their role to play. However, it is looking after our emotional health which is the ultimate key to unlock the path to greater happiness.
Looking at external factors to negate any unease we feel inside can seem effective short term. However, our daily internal state may remain unchanged, and we may continue to live in our heads, trying to fix our issues and resolve internal conflicts from our conscious state, which may be limiting us in our pursuit of happiness.
Our daily thoughts and feelings do matter to our overall wellbeing and contentment in life, not allowing them to be, resisting our uncomfortable thoughts and feelings mean that they may still be present, as Carl Yung said “whatever you resist not only persists but grows in size”.
So, how do we become happier?
In line with Dr Paul Conti2, cultivating agency and gratitude can lead to a state of contentment and approaching the world through this lens can build empowerment in individuals. Agency is about taking responsibility for life’s choices which is the opposite of victim mentality and being grateful for what we have, not what we have not. It is not about being happy with everything but about valuing our truth, having understanding through greater awareness and being curious.
Integrated Energy Techniques which is a combination of Emotional Freedom Techniques and Neuro Linguistic Programming can help us reframe our mindset and release any limiting thoughts, beliefs and conflicts that may be getting in the way of our happiness.
As Rick Hanson said” When you change your brain you change your life”.3
